The World Cup is the number one major global sporting event in terms of viewer ship. That means major money for advertisers, sponsors FIFA and host countries. The only direct funding a host country received from the proceeds of the world cup are the ticket sales and the predetermined amount promised by FIFA for hosing. In the past, host countries have banked on tourism to compensate for the cost of infrastructure and new stadiums.
